Students in 3rd grade learned about ways to be healthy and prevent disease. They created short video presentations using Photo Story 3 to teach others how to be healthy. First they researched information and then used story boards as a guide for their video. They described the pictures they would take and put the appropriate information by each picture. Following are examples of some of the videos they created....
Our 3rd grade students researched information about disease prevention during their health unit. They took notes from the website: Kids health They also used books from the library to research information about their disease. Students then created a brochure on their disease to teach others about their disease. We put a few of them in doctor's office in town. Following are examples of their Disease Brochures:
Blogging is a way to communicate and share information with others. It can be a personal website or web page that shares links, pictures, videos, etc. It is also a place to share thoughts, opinions, ideas, etc. It functions sort of like a personal journal or writer's notebook. I have used blogs with 3rd and 5th grade students. In 3rd grade we posted their personal narratives and students made comments on each other's writing. We also blogged with students in Korea. It was an engaging way to motivate students to take control of their own writing. They became intrinsically motivated to edit their writing and do their best!
In 5th grade we wrote about ourselves and current events. Students read news articles from Tween Tribune and then posted their thoughts, ideas, questions, etc. We also compared using blogs, tweets, and text messaging as forms of communication. When do you use each one? One of the challenging things for students is making meaningful comments to each other's blog posts. Below is a link that has information on blogging, lots of ways to use this with students and has great videos on making comments. Check it out! Kidblog This is the site we most often use for students. It is safe, easy to use and does not require an email. Teachers have options to control comments and access to the blog. Blogging with students Supportblogging Great site shows how to start a blog and has lots of examples of blogs to give you and your students ideas to get started. :) Wow! Collaboration in action! 5th grade students paired with 3rd grade students to teach them how to use the app, Pic Collage, to create posters for their disease unit. Students made a written plan where they wrote the facts and then determined the pictures they wanted to include on their posters. Students then worked together using one iPad to create Pic Collage posters about disease prevention. Way to stay healthy!

How can you invite your viewers to "live in your story" to connect with it emotionally? What is the "so what" of your story? What experience, connection or understanding did you gain from your story? Bernajean Porter is the author of DigiTales. She offers insight into the difference between digital stories and digital storytelling.
