Blogging is a way to communicate and share information with others. It can be a personal website or web page that shares links, pictures, videos, etc. It is also a place to share thoughts, opinions, ideas, etc. It functions sort of like a personal journal or writer's notebook. I have used blogs with 3rd and 5th grade students. In 3rd grade we posted their personal narratives and students made comments on each other's writing. We also blogged with students in Korea. It was an engaging way to motivate students to take control of their own writing. They became intrinsically motivated to edit their writing and do their best!
In 5th grade we wrote about ourselves and current events. Students read news articles from Tween Tribune and then posted their thoughts, ideas, questions, etc. We also compared using blogs, tweets, and text messaging as forms of communication. When do you use each one?
One of the challenging things for students is making meaningful comments to each other's blog posts. Below is a link that has information on blogging, lots of ways to use this with students and has great videos on making comments. Check it out!

This is the site we most often use for students. It is safe, easy to use and does not require an email. Teachers have options to control comments and access to the blog.
